SAPPL Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of Southern Arizona Pickleball Players League (SAPPL)? To offer pickleball players who want competitive play an opportunity to do so without the high cost of tournaments and the long distance of travel.

Why is there an affiliation with Arizona Pickleball Players League (APPL)? We are known as the Southern Arizona Pickleball Players League (SAPPL) which is in the Southern Region of the Arizona Pickleball Players League (APPL). SAPPL aligned with APPL to bring a standardized team based competitive format to the league in anticipation of APPL going state-wide and possibly nationwide.
League activities are being reported to USAPA to be in-step with the national organization’s awareness and policies.

How many communities and teams are committed to SAPPL?  6 Communities: Dave White, Palm Creek, Robson Ranch, Mission Royale, Sun City Anthem, Encanterra. Each community fielding men and women teams in 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5/5.0 rating (8 teams per community)

--Total of teams from all of the communities is anticipated to be 48 or more.

--Each team on playing days, would be 3 pair of 2 players in a rating, i.e., 3.0 women. It would include a captain who is playing, or not, and would have a substitute.

Where and when will play be, what is the location, days, and times of play? All matches will be played at Dave White courts in Casa Grande, on Tuesday or Wednesday, from 11:30 am to 6 pm. There are 12 courts available each day.

What are the anticipated dates of play? Preseason trial play dates: December 10,11; 17,18. These dates are for the purpose of getting all of the captains, players and procedures working smoothly for the start of the regular season.

Season league play dates are: January: 7,8; 14,15; 21, 22; 28, 29 (4 sessions). February: 4, 5; 12,13; 18,19; 25, 26 (4 sessions). March: 3, 4; 10,11 (2 sessions). Play-offs, March 24,25 (1 session).

What are the fees? Anticipated fee is $25 per player, for the entire season. This fee is inclusive of all costs that the player or league will incur; except of course for travel and food.

How do I join the SAPPL League? The sign-up process is in development. For now, contact Tom Lilly at, or inquire with the club administrator of your community.

I understand it is a team based league. How do I get on a team? Contact Tom Lilly at for now, or inquire with the club administration of your community.

Do I have to be a member of a club or community to participate? At this time, SAPPL is a community based league. However, if a community does not have enough interested players in a division, i.e. 4.5+ women, then players from outside a community may be admitted. 

The SAPPL League age requirement is 18 or older.
